Woods
Along with the classic hardwoods of cherry, mahogany, maple, and
ash that we use in our doors and furniture, we also use a large
quantity of redwood and Douglas fir. Both of these softwoods are
custom cut for us from a small northern California sawmill using
old-growth salvaged logs that have been down for many years. The
quality and beauty of the wood is unsurpassed.

Structure All our doors
have engineered cores for the stiles to insure a warp free future.
This also gives us the ability to book-match the show faces for a
more dramatic and balanced look. Besides the cope and stick gluing
surface we also use ½ inch dowels in the rail to stile connection.
Our furniture is built using classic joinery such as mortise and
tenon, dovetails, and other non-mechanical means of holding one
piece of wood to another.

Types
of doors, jambs, thresholds and thickness
Most of our doors and furniture are a one-off design that
exemplifies a motif within a home or business. Our exterior jambs
are one-piece rabbeted with silicon weather stripping. Exterior
doors jambs, especially in softwoods are 1.5" to 1.75" thick.
Interior or hardwood exterior jambs are usually 1.0"-1.25". Most
of our thresholds are made from genuine mahogany and cut with
exterior ears or horns. We build single entry doors, with or
without side-lights and transoms, French doors, all with or
without glass; all glass being tempered, single glazed, thermal,
beveled or art glass.

Finishes Most of our
doors and cabinets are finished with Sherwin Williams 'Kemvar'TM,
a durable conversion varnish. We have been using this finish for
about 15 years and find it out performs all others consistently in
high use situations. For doors in harsh weather situations we use
Sikkens Cetol door and window finish, a flexible product that will
expand and contract with the wood as it goes through seasonal
changes. |
