Stephen Rice
Craftsman/Owner

Stephen has been working wood for over 30 years, making musical instruments and furniture. His passion for music and woodworking got him a job at Wildwood Banjo Co. in the early 1970's, where he made guitars, banjos, and mandolins. When not woodworking, he spends his time with his wife and daughter, coaching youth softball, playing softball, and generally enjoying life's pleasures.

John Onstine
Craftsman/Shop Foreman

Born and raised in Los Angeles, John fled North in the early seventies to escape the heat and high density living. Landing in Humboldt County, he began a seven year introduction to woodworking driving a log truck. Being chased down steep hillsides by 25 tons of logs on a daily basis helped him develop a lasting respect for wood. He has been designing and building furniture for the last twenty years.

Jay Schectman
Woodworker

Born in Uruguay, in the midst of a political coup, his attention was drawn to the border between the U.S. and Mexico at an early age. Riding under trucks and walking a lot, he finally reached the object of his desire in 1992. Hiding in a turnip truck, he crossed the border into Arizona. Pondering the question, "What? Did you just fall off a turnip truck?!" he always answered "Yes," to roaring laughter from those within earshot. Eventually, Jay moved to Humboldt, for he was told that the climate was similar to his home country. He took an interest in woodworking and 7 years have passed. The love for what he does lies in a simple concept: from a drawing or blueprint, create a 3-D, free-standing reality, then stand back, happy, and enjoy what you've done.

Kathey Ryan

Office Factotum (person with an assortment of duties) accurately describes her role at Millworks. She handles wood products of a much thinner variety than her co-workers in the shop, and machinery much less dangerous. When not in the office, she spends time with her family of people and cats, does mosaic and other crafty activities, & plays percussive instruments.
